New Teachers Installed:  The Opening Service for the 2007/08 school year was held on 2 September with 250 attending the service and picnic.  During the service, in addition to three new Czech teachers, 8 one- year volunteer teachers, were installed.  The new Czech instructors include Marek Černý (Phy. Ed/Czech Language), Romana Michaligová (Art) and Jana Novosadová (Upper Grades ).  Our volunteers this year include two people from Plzeň:  Aleš Terš (who attended Martin Luther School and recently returned from the US, having earned a college degree from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN) and Ekaterina Brinza (Katja is a native of Moldova, but spent her high school years in Plzeň; she recently graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, WI.)  Among the American volunteers are Christian Eisenbeis who is here to continue Greek and Hebrew instruction for our two Czech seminary students, Leah Selje, Peter Luttman, Lucy Tillman, Angela Scarf, and Mollie Stern.  We wish all our new staff members the Lord’s richest blessings.  You can read more about several of them below:

Leah Selje

I just graduated with my bachelor's degree in Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I was raised in Madison, WI and attended Holy Cross Lutheran School (Mr. Silas Born was my principal) and then attended Lakeside Lutheran high school. My parents now live in Lake Mills which is just outside of Madison. Throughout college I have been very involved in the Wisconsin Lutheran campus ministry program at the university. I am 23 years old and am very excited to serve your school in the upcoming school year! I am looking forward to being led into a new culture and having many new opportunities.

Angela Scharf

I grew up just outside of Milwaukee, WI.  I attended Northwestern Preparatory High School in Watertown, WI,  and Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN.  Upon graduation, I was assigned to teach at Luther Preparatory School in Watertown, WI.  I taught there for six years (1999-2005) until accepting a call to teach at Evergreen Lutheran High School in Des Moines, Washington State.  I recently finished my second year of teaching there.  I have been involved with various extra curricular activities at school including: volleyball, basketball, forensics, drama, and track.  I enjoy getting to know new people and taking in the great outdoors-whether it be hiking, biking, or jogging.

Aleš Terš

My name is Aleš Terš and I was born on April 20th, 1984, in Plzeň. In 1992 I started studying at Martin Luther School in Plzeň. In 1997 I transferred to Církevní Gymnázium (in Plzeň) where I graduated in spring of 2003. The same year I left to study in the United States of America- at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota. I graduated in May, 2007, with a BA degree in Communication and English literature.  I like sports, food, traveling, watching movies. Besides my parents I have an older sister.

Lucy Tillman

My name is Lucy Marie Tillman and I am from Fremont, Michigan. I graduated from Michigan Lutheran Seminary in 2002 and went on to Community College for 2 years before transferring to Bethany Lutheran College to finish with my BA in Psychology this past December. While at BLC I played on the soccer team and was involved with a number of different extracurricular activities. I also enjoy being the youth group leader for my church, helping lead a 4-H (something like Sokol) group where I got the opportunity to do arts and crafts with the youth in my community. I have many different hobbies including running, photography, skiing and snowboarding, and, of course, traveling. My personality is very outgoing and I love meeting new people and learning new things. I am very excited for this opportunity to teach in Plzeň and spread God's Word!

Peter Luttman

I was born in Rochester, New York.  I lived in Plzeň for 7 years while my parents worked for Thoughts of Faith.  I graduated from ŠML and did my high school study at our school as well.  I am a graduate of Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota, with a degree in Business Administration.  I especially enjoy sports – watching and participating.

Mollie L. Stern

I am the oldest child of Pastor Jonathan and Patricia Stern of Flagstaff, Arizona.  I have a twin sister named Hannah, who is married to Seminarian Nate Scharf (Angela Scharf’s brother).   Hannah has taught grade school in Florida, Wisconsin, and Colorado.  My brother, Jesse, was recently a vicar in Salt Lake City, Utah.  And my youngest sister, Jenna, is a senior at Northern Arizona University, studying medicine.  I attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary, graduating in 1998.  I graduated from Martin Luther College in 2002, and  taught at Luther Preparatory School in Watertown, Wisconsin for the last five years.  I am so excited for the opportunity to teach at Martin Luther School, and take part in its extraordinary mission of spreading the gospel message!

Ladies’ Club Meetings:  All ladies are always welcome to attend our meetings.  We study God’s Word, pray together, enjoy Christian fellowship and some new craft or presentation every month.  The October meeting begins at 14:30 on the 12th.  The November meeting begins at 14:30 on the 23rd.

Small Children:  To provide a quiet place where parents may take their babies out of church for a few minutes if they become fussy, Room 106 will be open every Sunday.  Go through the doors on the left side of our chapel, then go left through the first doors in the hallway (marked 108), and left again into Room 106.

A Special Offer:  Gabriela Krákorová has volunteered to watch any pre-school children  during the sermon each week, if their parents so desire.  She will provide supervision, including a Bible-related activity in the Kindergarten Room.  Each Sunday, during the hymn before the sermon, children can meet Mrs. Krákorová at the doors on the left side of the chapel.  She will bring the children back during the hymn following the sermon and prayers.

Enrichment Reading for our Students:  Our students, especially those in grades K-2, really enjoy being read to during their English classes.  This is considered a treat, and also helps the children as they begin reading in English themselves.  Last spring, though, we had a problem. Many of the books we had for this purpose had been used for many years—in fact, most were “used” when we got them—and they were literally falling apart.  We thought it would be really great if we could both replace some of the more popular books, and also expand our library of “beginning readers” books, and we asked some American friends of our mission to help.
The results were just fantastic!  Over the last six months, we have replaced several of our “old favorites,” which they children love to have read to them over and over.  Plus, we have expanded our collection of books for beginning readers by over 200 titles!  Our students are really enjoying the books, and we also received gifts of money to help with the cost of shipping the books to Plzeň.
Many people and several congregations helped with this project.  Jeanne Schewe, who with her husband served as a volunteer teacher here in 2000-2001, helped to choose and purchase books. Trinity-St. Luke’s Lutheran School in Watertown, WI (where our 7th graders visited earlier this year) collected money to buy books.  Other congregations donated used books, and money to buy other books, as did many individuals.  Thanks to you all!  Teaching English gives us access to students, and so gives us opportunities to witness to them.

20th Wedding Anniversary:  On behalf of our congregation we extend our well-wishes to Tomáš and Jitka Hněvsovi who recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.  May the Lord continue to lead and bless you!  May you continue in future years to enjoy the joy and happiness which the Lord has granted you.  Many are uplifted by your example of faithfulness and love.  May God continue to bless you with faith, hope and love.  In Christ, your brothers and sisters.  (Signed) Martin Vršecký.

Time Change:  Set your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday, 27 October.

Kindergarten Family Meetings:  As previously announced, Vicar Krákora along with Aleš Terš (a former student at ŠML who is now teaching our children), will be arranging meetings with all Kindergarten families.  The families will receive a call to set up meeting dates and times, with meetings beginning in October.  During the meeting, our church and school programs and activities will be presented, along with a video showing a Religion class taught to this year’s Kindergarten children.  You will have a chance to ask any questions you have about the Christ-centered program of our mission and school.

Horní Bříza:  Beginning on Sunday, October 28, services will begin at 17:00 in Horní Bříza.
